Buying orchids online can be a little bit tricky, especially if you've never done it before
0:06
And orchids are so expensive that you want to get it right when you do it
0:12
So in this video, I'm going to go over what to expect, when to demand a refund, what you should do
0:20
and how to treat your orchid as soon as you get that box and take it out
0:25
What are the steps that you need to take to guarantee that this orchid will be healthy
0:30
in your care. Hi, I'm Amanda Matthews and thank you so much for watching this video at Orcadaria
0:40
where I share my tips of how I grow my orchids indoors since my outside climate isn't the best
0:46
So in this video, I'm going to go over three parts of it and one is before you hit the buy button while you're waiting for your orchids to arrive and after your orchids actually do arrive
0:59
So those are the three. parts of it let's get into the first part before you hit that buy button now what's the best
1:06
place to buy an orchid it really doesn't matter if it's on facebook eBay Etsy or amazon not all
1:14
orchid vendors are the same as not all people are the same so sometimes you'll have a smaller shop
1:20
that actually does amazingly well and there is one that i thought was really unique and creative
1:27
they go on Facebook every Saturday and they show their orchids like on a preview
1:32
this is the orchid if you want it, type in this code. I do wanna say upfront, I am not sponsored by anybody
1:39
So that's, I kind of like that because I can give my honest opinion without worrying
1:44
There are two things that you need to avoid before you hit that buy button
1:49
Check and see if the vendor will ship this orchid bare rooted
1:53
That means it will come in no potting media whatsoever And they will have to unpot that, wrap it up, and ship it to you
2:02
Now, if they do this, you do not want to buy an orchid that is in bud or in spike
2:08
Because that is too much change in the environment, too much change in that cramped space inside the box
2:17
Your orchid will suffer tremendously if it is in butter and spike
2:23
Make sure that if they send it bare rooted, that the cycle
2:27
of the orchid has just finished blooming has fallen off or is going dormant. That is the best
2:33
time to buy an orchid if it is bare rooted. All other orchids, the only thing I do recommend is
2:42
you can buy them any time of year, but I would avoid winter and extremely hot summers. During winter
2:50
if you buy an orchid online and it sits even three hours in that cold truck, you won't have an
2:56
organ when you unbox it. Another thing before you hit that buy button on their site, make sure you are
3:04
getting the right size of orchid. Now, there are a few words to avoid like rare and limited time only
3:14
gets you to click on that button faster because you don't know if there's going to have another
3:19
bloom like that one. If it is rare, you need to know why it's rare. Why can't they do that
3:26
bloom again why can't they make that cross again so beware of those and if you see the word rare
3:34
look on other websites to see if you can find that same genus and species and see if they have a cheaper
3:40
version because sometimes just because it has rare limited they jack up the price as to the size of the
3:47
orchid there are going to be several sizes the really tiny ones are going to come in what it called a flask Now a flask can hold probably 20 orchids inside of it It like a bottle closed And those orchids are probably
4:04
going to take five to six years to bloom. They are extremely, extremely tiny. They have just come out of
4:12
the have just been propagated and stuffed in that flask. I do not recommend if you are
4:18
a new orchid grower to get into unflasking orchids. If you have some experience with orchids
4:27
try it. It's a great value for the price because you can get like 20 orchids for 50 bucks
4:33
But you really have to know how to treat a seedling, which is the next step. So you have the
4:39
flask orchids, then you have the seedling orchids. Seedling orchids will probably take three to
4:45
four years to bloom. They have their roots. already established. They have their leaves already established. They are tiny, tiny, tiny and
4:54
will not put out as flower spike anytime soon. They are still not even adolescents. They are just
5:02
coming out of childhood. They're trying to make it on their own. They will need a lot of
5:08
humidity. They will need different light conditions. So check out with your vendor what
5:15
orchid it is and how to care for this seedling. They also come in an extremely low price. So if you have
5:23
all the time in the world and you're not really worried about the orchid hobby fast, they are a great
5:29
way. So you have flask, you have ceilings, and the next one is near blooming size. Now near
5:34
blooming size can mean a lot of different things to a lot of different vendors. Always check with
5:39
your vendor to make sure what this near blooming is. It should
5:45
mean that in the next coming year it will bloom. That's what it should mean. But near bloom can mean
5:52
different things to different people. And the last stage, which is going to be the mature plant
5:59
is that it already is ready to put out that flower spike. It already has put out probably a year ago
6:07
And if they didn't sell it, it's going to be bigger. But if it hasn't, that means that this year
6:13
when it comes into the cycle, it will bloom. You can buy orchids in bud or already in blossom. Now
6:22
these are higher, more expensive. I do not recommend those. I mean, they are amazing to unbox because
6:31
you unbox it's like, whoa, look at this orchid. Don't be fooled by that because they've been in
6:39
this box from anywhere from three days to up to a week
6:43
and it usually takes a week to get to where I live. So they're probably going to blast, which means if they have buds on them, they will shrivel and fall off
6:54
If they have blossoms that can also happen, it's called blossom blast
6:59
It's just too much for these orchids to go through this process
7:04
And it's great for the first day when you unbox it, but for the next week and you start to see all your buds fall off
7:11
it is extremely depressing and you paid more for that. So why
7:17
Why? Why? My suggestion is if you're a beginner, start with the mature plant that's not in bud and not
7:25
in spike. If you have a little more experience by one that is near blooming because that is the best
7:33
rate for you. And if you have lots of orchids and you're genius at this and you just want an excellent
7:40
cost benefit. fit and you have plenty of time go for the flask the last tip before you hit the buy button see if they have a tracking number I seen so many scams You can set up a shop online in less than an afternoon And if you have only
7:57
three or four products, you can set it up in two hours. And I know because I tested this and I
8:04
actually wanted to see if it was true and it is. You can do that. It's pretty simple too
8:09
Always make sure that you're not getting into a scam. Make sure that you're not getting into a scam. they have a tracking number? Who do they send it by? Is it UPS? Is it FedEx? Is it some tracking that's in your
8:19
country? See what the customer reviews are. And I will tell you this, customer reviews can be
8:27
manufactured. So if it's not on a shop like Amazon, if it's their own shop, be aware of that
8:35
unless you really know who you're talking with. Also, if this video is providing any kind of good
8:41
information for you or valuable information please hit that like button or comment that really helps
8:46
me know what videos to do more of and what videos to stay away from and not make that many in the
8:52
future because it obviously did not help you and that's the whole point of making these videos
8:59
second part of this video you've hit the buy button now you're waiting and you have a tracking
9:05
number as soon as that box hits your door and they ring your doorbell and you run out there to pick
9:11
up that box, what you're going to do, get a camera, get a video, video your whole unboxing
9:20
And why do I say this? Because of proof. You don't know how they sent your orchid. You don't know
9:26
what conditions that orchid was in. And the worst part of orchid cares, it's easy for them to send you
9:33
an orchid that's, oh, that was one that never sold. It's all full of fungus. It had snail. It had
9:39
mini bugs. It had all kinds of mites. This orchid's going to die anyway. Let's just send it to them and
9:44
we got a good easy 30 bucks. Be careful with this. The only thing that can save you is proof
9:54
Take pictures, take videos. Video your whole unboxing. And this is a funny thing is I cannot do an
10:02
unboxing like this because I'm like, ooh, ah. And it's just a ridiculous
10:09
when I go to edit. So that's, I have to do them separately. I have to do my ooze and eyes over there
10:15
Then I have to get the information out over here. So you put your box on the table. Do not get your
10:20
knife and stake it down and pull it all the way across. I've done this so many times and I've just
10:27
cut through. I've cut through leaves. I've cut through potting media. I haven't cut spikes
10:33
but I have cut blossoms. So make sure that you're angling your knife or your any kind of instrument
10:38
that you have to open that box that it's angled slightly across. The orchid has already gone through
10:45
hell in its little terms of life. They extend this horrible period of its life just for a little bit
10:50
Then it can kick in and start growing like it should. So get this orchid. You're going to
10:55
unpot it. Yes, you're going to unpot it. Unless it's in spike, unless it has blooms on it
11:03
then keep it in its potting media. But it's already been through the worst of its life. A little more
11:08
isn't going to do that much damage. Now there are people who will disagree with me. That's fine. This is how
11:14
I do it because I figure, I mean, if you're already suffering, what's another day? So you're going
11:20
to unpot it. That's how you can check on the roots. Now, if all the roots are rotted
11:27
that didn't happen in one week. You can call the vendor. You can take pictures. You can show
11:32
it If there not one good viable route on this I mean get your money back also when to get your money back There are no good roots Or the problem that happened with this orchid was not during transport
11:48
Because during transport, don't expect a beautiful orchid to come out of this pot
11:53
The leaves are going to be, I mean, even if they wrap them nicely
11:58
some of the leaves will bend and break and get bruised. I mean, that's part of, yes, that's part of FedEx
12:06
That's part of just Amazon Prime. So expect that this orchid is not going to be in the best shape ever
12:14
If the problem you can tell is not transport. For example, your orchid came with snails
12:21
Your orchid came with mealy bugs. Your orchid has a fungus all over three-fourths of the leave
12:26
The problem came from the nursery and transport did not cause this problem
12:34
Then you can ask for a refund. So you're going to take this orchid out of the box
12:38
You're going to examine the roots and then you're going to give it a good soak
12:43
The best thing for this is medium lukewarm water. Do not give it a cold bath
12:49
Do not drown it, but you are going to rinse the leaves off in warm water
12:55
Let this orchid really get a good drink because it's been inside of this closed package
13:02
Also, do not get your orchid from the dark box. put it up on your highest shelf even if it is a highlight orchid. It needs some time to adjust
13:12
because it's been three or four days or like a seven days inside a box and with no light whatsoever
13:19
then you're going to throw it in sun. Don't do that. Just gradually bring that orchid up
13:25
put it on your lowest shelf and then bring it up to where it should be on the highest shelf
13:31
or wherever it should be. Gradually adapt this orchid back into sun
13:35
light. Don't shock it and you know place it outside even keep it inside for a day and then take it
13:42
outside if that's where you grow. You are also going to want to spray this orchid with either
13:48
insecticide, fungicide, bactericide. I use fison 20. If you don't have that, you can use
13:55
isopropyl alcohol or rubbing alcohol. Spray this orchid down so that even if you don't see any
14:02
visible signs. There might be bacteria and fungus in there that will take over your whole collection
14:09
So really spray that orchid down. You can do this while you're soaking your orchid and giving
14:15
that good hydration. The next thing you're going to want to do after you spray your orchid is keep this
14:20
orchid in quarantine for at least two weeks. I've seen people keep them up for a month, but I've
14:27
never had problems after two weeks. Usually in two weeks. If there's a problem, I can
14:32
already tell there's a problem and you don't want to have that orchid already, you know, buy
14:38
your other orchids and just, wow, I mean, my whole collection just went to pot because I didn't
14:44
check something. So keep this in quarantine for two weeks and then after two weeks put it in
14:51
its permanent place and leave it there, leave it alone. You don't need to be messing with your
14:56
orchids. I say this, but I do it all the time. I mean, so leave your orchid
15:02
alone, leave it in one space. And the last part, go write a review, help other orchid buyers
15:10
who have no clue if this company is good or not. Don't stop your orchid care here. I can suggest
15:16
these two videos right here and they will deepen your knowledge about how to care for your
15:22
orchids and hopefully get you into new genus or new genre of orchids. And that's always exciting
15:30
to try something now. In all, I wish you the best in your orchid care and happy cultivating
