There are mainly three essential things when it comes to orchid carve, when you should water

when you should repot, and when you should fertilize. And in this third category, it's what fertilizer

should you use when you're fertilizing? So let's look at those very quickly one by one

reminded of when to water that orchid. The second one is when to repot, and that's pretty easy too because once you know what

genus and what species of orchid you have, you can go through a generalization and what

potting media, of course. So if you have sphagnum moss and pure sphagnum moss, you'll probably want to be repotting

once a year. If you have other materials in there that are organic and they're going to break down, like

orchid bark, you can extend that. period for two to up to three years and if you have all inorganic material that

doesn't break down like rock you can just keep that organ in there for a heck of a

long time now the problem is when it comes to fertilizer and that is why I've

decided to make a spreadsheet that you can control when you can fertilize your

orchids but before I get into that just an overview of what you want to do The orchid will go through four major cycles during its life and usually it repeats this cycle on a yearly basis Now some orchids will

skip this cycle entirely and do whatever they want to do. You just leave that orchid alone and just

make sure it's getting fertilizer and it has a balanced fertilizer all year long, because sometimes

it can be within a flower and it can have roots, and it can be growing suitable

and just doing all that at the same time. Some orchids are just rule breakers, and that's part of their nature

You have to respect that. Most orchids, though, will have a cycle of when you should fertilize, when you should

stop fertilizer, when you should increase fertilizer, and what fertilizer to increase

What you're going to do is you're going to look at it this way. In the NPK ratio, there are three major macronutrients that are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium

the N, the P, and the K. for nitrogen the first one you're going to want to increase the nitrogen when the orchid is going through its major leaf and suitable growth so when you see that you're going to want to provide more nitrogen to your orchid when you see the roots starting to grow you want to increase the potassium in your orchids now if you use banana peels this will be a whole different thing you need to watch that video on banana peels because that will throw off this npk

ratio a lot. So throw out the banana peels, don't use those and just keep with the NPK

The third one is when you see a flower spike starting to form. That indicates it is entering

the third phase, which is the inflorescence phase where it's going to work on pollination

attracting a pollinator Everything that we usually focus just on a flower the organ is focused on pollination Those are the three Some orchids have a fourth phase which is dormancy We going to cut out all fertilizer altogether

You don't need to fertilize your orchid then. So it gets kind of confusing

When should you fertilize? What should you do? How should you do this

The ideal thing is if you wrote out all this on a piece of paper and have the orchid with the dates

that it started growing root, that it started growing a leaf, that it started putting out a flower spike

and when it went into dormancy. When you have those dates, one month before

you're going to start to increase. For example, when it started putting out new roots

you're gonna wanna increase the potassium one month before that phase. When it started putting out leaves and pseudobulbs

That's why it's good to have to have, have and when it put out the flower spike you're going to want to increase the phosphorus one month
