There are mainly three essential things when it comes to orchid carve, when you should water
0:05
when you should repot, and when you should fertilize. And in this third category, it's what fertilizer
0:11
should you use when you're fertilizing? So let's look at those very quickly one by one
0:20
And if you are wondering, where is midnight in my video? Well, she found out that my orchids were
0:26
nice and warm and cozy and had lots of humidity in it and she was sitting on top of some of my
0:31
orchids so i put her bed up there and she is right there that's that's where midnight is so let's look at those
0:45
very quickly one by one the first one is watering now i did a whole video on when to find that date
0:51
out and you can watch it up here so i'm really going to skip over that what you need is just to re-refer
0:56
reminded of when to water that orchid. The second one is when to repot, and that's pretty easy too because once you know what
1:06
genus and what species of orchid you have, you can go through a generalization and what
1:11
potting media, of course. So if you have sphagnum moss and pure sphagnum moss, you'll probably want to be repotting
1:18
once a year. If you have other materials in there that are organic and they're going to break down, like
1:24
orchid bark, you can extend that. period for two to up to three years and if you have all inorganic material that
1:32
doesn't break down like rock you can just keep that organ in there for a heck of a
1:37
long time now the problem is when it comes to fertilizer and that is why I've
1:43
decided to make a spreadsheet that you can control when you can fertilize your
1:49
orchids but before I get into that just an overview of what you want to do The orchid will go through four major cycles during its life and usually it repeats this cycle on a yearly basis Now some orchids will
2:03
skip this cycle entirely and do whatever they want to do. You just leave that orchid alone and just
2:10
make sure it's getting fertilizer and it has a balanced fertilizer all year long, because sometimes
2:16
it can be within a flower and it can have roots, and it can be growing suitable
2:21
and just doing all that at the same time. Some orchids are just rule breakers, and that's part of their nature
2:27
You have to respect that. Most orchids, though, will have a cycle of when you should fertilize, when you should
2:35
stop fertilizer, when you should increase fertilizer, and what fertilizer to increase
2:40
What you're going to do is you're going to look at it this way. In the NPK ratio, there are three major macronutrients that are nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium
2:50
the N, the P, and the K. for nitrogen the first one you're going to want to increase the nitrogen when the orchid is going through its major leaf and suitable growth so when you see that you're going to want to provide more nitrogen to your orchid when you see the roots starting to grow you want to increase the potassium in your orchids now if you use banana peels this will be a whole different thing you need to watch that video on banana peels because that will throw off this npk
3:21
ratio a lot. So throw out the banana peels, don't use those and just keep with the NPK
3:29
The third one is when you see a flower spike starting to form. That indicates it is entering
3:35
the third phase, which is the inflorescence phase where it's going to work on pollination
3:41
it's going to work on seeds, it's going to work on the blossom, it's going to work on
3:44
attracting a pollinator Everything that we usually focus just on a flower the organ is focused on pollination Those are the three Some orchids have a fourth phase which is dormancy We going to cut out all fertilizer altogether
4:00
You don't need to fertilize your orchid then. So it gets kind of confusing
4:05
When should you fertilize? What should you do? How should you do this
4:09
The ideal thing is if you wrote out all this on a piece of paper and have the orchid with the dates
4:17
that it started growing root, that it started growing a leaf, that it started putting out a flower spike
4:23
and when it went into dormancy. When you have those dates, one month before
4:30
you're going to start to increase. For example, when it started putting out new roots
4:35
you're gonna wanna increase the potassium one month before that phase. When it started putting out leaves and pseudobulbs
4:42
you're going to want to increase the nitrogen one month before that
4:46
That's why it's good to have to have, have and when it put out the flower spike you're going to want to increase the phosphorus one month
4:51
before that date so that's how it's important to have these things written out so i have two
4:59
solutions for you and you can pick which one works for you one's free one's not when i wrote my
5:05
book orchid journey it has all that written in the fertilization part of the guide and i go through how you can
5:17
write down your date and keep note of your orchids in here when you should fertilize, when you should
5:24
not fertilize and that's in here. But I've seen a lot of people say, well, I didn't want, because this
5:31
is 369 pages and there's care guides in here. I go through a lot of different things. And some
5:37
people said well I just wanted a plain notebook I listened to you And so I launched my new orchid notebook Now this has purely no guides in here It just notes And you can write down what fertilizer you used when you used it And it has a page in here right here where
5:58
you can write all that down. So you will be reminded. Now this one is on Amazon. You can click the
6:03
link below to get it. And the other solution I have for you, which is free, is one that I've been
6:11
working on for so long and I am so excited to finally get it done. It's the Excel
6:17
worksheet and you can see that at this address down here. You type in www. Orchidaria.com
6:25
slash Excel and that's with 1L dash orchid dash tracker and that will go to a page on my
6:35
website where you can download the Excel sheet for free. And it has everything in
6:41
there that what I just said you can input the data on that page I have another video a
6:46
completely different video explaining all the step by steps of how to fill it out what format
6:53
to use but good thing also is that you have a Windows or you have a Mac yes they work on both
7:01
I've tried to make the program accessible to the earliest dates possible so if you have a
7:08
2003 forward this should work an Excel program if you have one that is earlier than that you can
7:15
try but some of the formulas might not work properly so go over there to that website and that's why
7:24
today i'm not going to put a page for you to link to you know like i always do on the two videos over
7:30
here but please go over there download it you know leave a comment i know this video was short but i wanted
7:36
to keep it short so that you could go over there and get your Excel tracker. Thank you so much for watching and I hope wish you all the best in your orchid care and happy cultivating
